Agile Project Development at Intel: A Scrum Odyssey - Tech musing #1

Intel Corporation is an American multinational tech company that is considered as one of the world's highest and largest valued semiconductor chipmakers. It is the inventor of a series of microprocessors, the processors that are found in most respective computers, and it supplies processors for companies such as Samsung, Apple, Dell and HP. Intel corporation also creates other devices that are related to communications and computing such as motherboard chipsets, network interface controllers and integrated circuits, flash memory, graphics chips, etc.

In the microprocessor industry, product development group exists to provide test guarantee to support cost-effective product selection. Participating in between different departments as in manufacturing and design teams product development engineering is often found in a lot of pressure facing issues that are already out of control such as team level deadline, scope, requirements, or deliverables.

Related to class material; reflected in this case we can see how implementing agile methodologies helped Intel company to better coordinate the efforts of the sub-teams within product development engineering. They organized some specific teams to manage a more integrated approach to product development.

“A long history in fabrication and manufacturing has resulted in a strong waterfall culture at Intel, embraced widely as the best path to success.” Teams are now organized having functionality, and the result is that some teams had very high turnover at the end of a project.

I believe that this information is helpful to us because sooner or later we all will be exposed to managerial roles. It is key to now how to face, manage, and organize this type of projects for better company results.

  1. This is such a great case. Lots of details about scrum, which we'll cover soon. I may use this case, as it goes into some detail about scrum and reasons Intel moved to agile. If you are going to use a case like this again, you should provide more detail of its contents.
